Prison cell interior, Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP)
Many believed that crime is the result of environment, and that solitude will make the criminal regretful and penitent hence the new word, penitentiary. This correctional theory, as practiced here at ESP, will become known as the Pennsylvania System.
A view down one of the many creepy corridors of Eastern State Penitentiary.
ESP offers great light, textures, and urban decay for photographers. Located in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia this prison was operational from 1829 until 1971. Today it's U.S. National Historic Landmark, open to the public as a museum for tours.
